Biography
Polite Sleeper is a post-folk mess, with a live reputation that shakes like Elvis. From folk to country and the proud scars of punk, the band turns soft lullabies and the occasional sing-a-long into a spectacle no one ever expects from an acoustic trio.
Imagine if John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats fronted Xiu Xiu. Imagine if your next pub fight came with three-part harmonies and jazz precision. It's what happens when a bedroom side-project from former punks develops on the road and in the moment in classic DIY fashion.
The songs are quirky but heartfelt and serious, with lyrics detailing the anxieties that come with growing up and throwing up in new places. And with only a keyboard, banjo and pedal steel to round out each record, the Brooklyn-based trio fills up the space with personality alone. It's authentic and honest, emotional and fun. And as anyone who's ever witnessed a PS show can attest -- it's unlike anything you've ever seen.
It's confessional punk for lovers and readers.
It's a call to anyone who can laugh, respect and practice the tougher scales.
History
Jason and Tim met in San Francisco in 2002 and formed The Yellow Press, a Ye! Ye! hardcore/punk quartet with a riotous live reputation. With releases on X-Mist and Day After, they toured for over two years, opening for the likes of Against Me!, Xiu Xiu, The Thermals, Erase Errata and The Hold Steady before amicably disbanding in 2005 following one final European tour.
Jason left California for New York and Tim followed soon thereafter. Together that winter they recorded a handful of sparse, acoustic songs in various apartments, dealing with friends, lovers, substance abuse, and most notably not having a band anymore.
During that period the duo met Michael Curtes, who added piano to a few unfinished ideas and the session was quietly released as a five-song EP and 12" in June 2007. The trio immediately picked up where The Yellow Press left off, touring Europe and both US coasts in support, and despite few expectations found a surprising balance (and noted buzz) between their punk pasts and the intimate introspection of the new material.
